Reading Response 02-Design Development Environment

This reading consists of a large amount of information. It analysis the design development environment of the frequently used parametric design software such as Catia, Solid Works and Pro/ENGINEER. Unlike other modeling programs, these software require the users to have a  clear idea in mind before stepping into the digital environment. As far as I can see, that strategy is closed related to the relationship between the designers and the computers. Who is the slave, and who is the slaveholder? Through all these practices, I find out that, in order not to be controlled and constrained by the program, we must have a plan before modeling. Or, the efficiency can be very low, and the result might be a total mess.

The author also spoke highly of the controlling power of these software.Users can control the internal relations between part features through constrains and dimensionally driven modeling techniques. This advantage can become extremely obvious when designers are seeking for type variations and design options. By changing one or several factors at a time, a totally new outcome is generated. That high efficiency and control power can lead us much closer to the most perfect design. In my opinion, that is the biggest advantage of CATIA.
