PROJECT 05 - FRAMEWORK FORM - GUANGZHOU TOWER

GUANZHOU TOWER

For this project, I want to simulate the framework and analyse the structure of Canton tower. Back ground information:(Canton Tower is a 600m, 1,969 ft tall multi-purpose observation tower in Canton, China. It is the tallest structure in China and the fourth-tallest freestanding structure in the world).

I observed the framework of Ganton tower by controlling three parameters of this tower:

1. Height

2. Rotation Angle

3. Radius of ellipse

The process of the framework's generation:

Structural Simulation based on self weight:

1. Tension and Compression

2. Deflection

READING RESPONSE 03-Architecture of Emergence

Just as a saying goes, "Change is the only absolute in the world." In the article of "Architecture of Emergency", the author tried to present us the dynamic process of evolution. In order to best fit into the constantly changing environment, everything (living or non-living, small scale or large scale, nature or culture) can not escape from this discipline. Within this process, energy and information is the indispensable driving force. The changing in environment will have an influence on our human behavior, in turn, these behavior will act on the environment itself. When the energy or information are passed or transmitted from one thing to another, the overall organization will become more and more complicated.

These complicated forms and relationships that generated in different systems seems extremely interesting to our future architects. In my opinion, that is the real wisdom of the nature. These intricate physical forms are very worthy to study for geometrical designs. One might often find that the nature can easily put the greatest work made by human in shade. Besides the charming patterns, there are many inherent relationships. Besides this, the natural organizations are the outcomes of fighting against severe environment. These brilliant strategies can win the most excellent engineers. Perhaps that is the reason for the prevalent of bionic architectures.

PROJECT 03-EMERGENT FORM-DEAR ANTLERS

DEAR ANTLERS

For this project, my idea comes from the shape of the dear antlers.Althogh it is looks pretty complex at the first glance, it can be splited into several simillar components.

Process01
Draw the sketches on different surfaces.

Process02
Make the munti-section solid

Process 03
Assemble different parts.
Make confinations between them.

PROJECT 02-FROM FLAT TO FORM- THE CHANGING SURFACES

THE CHANGING SURFACES

PROCESS01.SKETCHES
For the sketches, I used a circle and a series of lines and angles to define the relationships between different lines.

PROCESS 02. MAKE THE LINES 3D
I used two kinds of colours to represent the vertical and the horizontal arcs. For the pink arcs, their height are in proportion to the radius of the circle. However, the blue arcs' heights are inversely proportion to the radius of the circle.

PROCESS 03. CUT THE SURFACES
At last, I made several circles, extruded them, and make them cut the upper surfaces.

Instead of a real architecture, for this project, my idea comes from the process of knitting.
